About the Author

My name is Zach. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri and now live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am a gay male that struggled with my own sexuality for the majority of my life. Because of my own religious convictions and how society perceived homosexuality, I had difficulty accepting myself until I was well into my 20’s. I came out to friends and family when I was 25 years old. I am still not out to most of my extended family, which continues to be an issue of debate for myself.

I originally attended college at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri where I pursued degrees in criminology and psychology. I did not complete my degrees as I became burned out with school and didn’t have a clear direction of what I wanted to do with my degrees. I had a goal of becoming a therapist for at-risk youth, but after having more than seven years of experience working with juvenile delinquents and children and teenagers with acute psychiatric disorders, I chose to discontinue my education until I could find the career path I wanted to take. I recently started back at school and am attending Ashford University. I am majoring in communication and political science. While I’m still unsure on what exactly I want to do, I have several choices in mind. Politics has been an interest of mine since I was a teenager and so I am hoping to become a political adviser for political campaigns.

I consider myself to be a centrist and I lean libertarian. I believe in giving a lot of rights to the states and firmly believe the Constitution to be a living document. Due to my political ideology I don’t always vote for all democrats or all republicans. I research both major party candidates and I look at some candidates from third parties. In recent years, I have voted for libertarians in senate races and one presidential race. I will never vote for a candidate that supports banning same-sex marriage, but I will vote for a candidate that only supports civil unions if I feel they are strong in other areas that concern me.

Besides politics, I also enjoy traveling. I recently came back from a trip to the Caribbean, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia. I also have a blog that documents my travel experiences. You can find that blog at zenmindzeimind.wordpress.com. I enjoy outdoors activities such as camping, hiking and kayaking. I’m an avid baseball fan and a fanatic of the St. Louis Cardinals. You can also find me supporting the Pittsburgh Steelers, St. Louis Rams, St. Louis Blues and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Wine and beer are also passions of mine.

  1. I like what you wrote. I’ve been agnostic for quite awhile; not politically inspired; but I’m also a proud gay man. Came out of the closet when I was 24 and have not looked back. I admire your courage.

    1. It sounds like you and I may be similar. I came out to most of my friends on my 25th birthday (had a coming out party) and I came out to my family at 25.

It’s all right that you’re not politically inspired. I’m sure I make up for the both of us… lol. I’ve always annoyed my friends and family with how politically inspired I am. I’m sure you have the same amount of courage as I do, you may just show it in a different way 🙂

      Were you raised Christian?
